[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Vmos/3

jim_d@cimcor.mn.org (Jim Dahlberg) (05/27/89)

I recently got an add for an operating system for 386s called Vmos/3.
This is NOT VM/386 or PCMOS/386, although it may have been intentional
that people would get them confused. It is sold by StarPath Systems Inc,
4700 So. Hagadorn Rd., East Lansing, Michagan 48823. (1-800-456-8667 or
517-332-1137). The introductory price is $99 until 7/31/89, and has a
30 day money back guarantee.

Anyway, it is a multitasking OS for 386 machines. It supports MS-DOS and
PC-DOS 3.1 and above. It runs in 1Mbyte. It has automatic disk cacheing,
EMS support, supports GEM Desktop and MS Windows, priorities from 20 to 50,
task protection using virtual 8086s, mouse support, virtual memory, and
demand paging.

It currently supports only one user, but a multiuser option will be available.

It sounds pretty good to me, especially for only $99. Has anyone tried it
or heard anything about it?

I just got a copy. It certainly looks interesting. Unfortunately,
there are (ahem) a few bugs. The worst one is that if I hit CNTL-ALT-
DEL at the wrong time, it wipes out my hard disk. This is (sort of)
documented, but that doesn't make it any more pleasant.

The idea of playing NETHACK while downloading a file with PROCOMM and
crunching a drawing with AutoCAD is attractive. These were the first
three serious programs I tried. None of them work. I haven't called
their phone support people (non-800 number, BTW) yet; I may be doing
something dumb. I suspect that VMOS is boggled by VGA.

The very strong impression that I get is that this is an alpha version
that the business types have thrown out the door to meet their schedule.
Supposedly, there is a new version due out by 15 June that will Fix
Everything. It will be available over their BBS as a free upgrade to
registered users. We'll see. Until then, it's just a novelty that's
too dangerous to play with.

If they ever get it working the way it's described in the manuals, it'll
be really nifty.

I also have a copy of VMOS/3 (current rev 1.0f). I am convinced as well
that it has problems with VGA. I put my paradise card in Hercules mode
and many of the crashes do not occur. In VGA mode it hangs during
MS Word 4.0 startup, QModem talks to the modem, but not back to the
display, etc. It is definitely too unreliable for any serious work.
