brewer@ace.DEC (Meetings are for those with little to do) (03/20/86)
As a relative newcomer to this net, I recently replied (innocently) to a request for forming another newsgroup. The one response I got, in this newsgroup, was a public chastisement for doing so. (I should have responded to the original poster, I was told, to save net traffic.... ....even though the respondant could have likewise sent me a personal response, thus saving additional set traffic. Being new to USENET, I could have used some education as to proper behaviour... what I got was public abuse... My 2 month opinion of usenet? Some groups are very well run. Others consist of 15 authors remonstrating one message poster on how he/she has "abused" the net! Also endless discussions criticizing multiple newsgroup postings, newsgroup name discussions and other "important" stuff. Very unfriendly. The minority of "experts" that are SO willing to criticize make it difficult for newcomers to "feel at home". On to a friendlier net... -John Generally needed Disclimer: I am not speaking for DEC, just for myself...
