[comp.sys.ibm.pc] 4-DOS : Replacement for COMMAND.COM

jarnot@canisius.UUCP (Kevin Jarnot) (06/08/89)

Has anyone out there used 4DOS, a replacement for COMMAND.COM? I
installed it today, and it seems to MANY features that MS-DOS desperately
needs (ie. aliases, history, on-line manual, etc). I'm wondering if anyone
has had any compatability problems with it, as the $50 shareware cost is
a bit steep for my budget, and I don't want to blow the money away.

I tried 4DOS for a week, but I took it off my system due to a bug.
At first all worked well, but at some point I was no longer able to
copy files from one disk to another (harddrive --> floppy, floppy -->
harddrive). It wouldn`t have been so bad except that the files were
destroyed in the process. I first believed it was only due to using
the 286 version, but the same thing happened on my machine at home using
the 8088 version.

If 4DOS has this bug, it could also have others. You may want to
contact the author before purchasing the $50 version.

I have been using 4DOS for about 3 weeks now and like it. It provides many
features I have become accustomed to using tsr programs like a history
mechanism (ced, dosedit, pced), file completion (filec), a rich command
language, and on-line help. I have had no problems such as the file
destruction while copying (and if I do, i'll get rid of 4dos immediately)
and my only complaint is that the file completion is *not* unix style like
filec. Instead of completing a name until the first ambiguity is reached
and then prompting the user for more characters, 4dos retrievs the first
possible match (the whole file name) and then if you don't like it, you can
ask for the next match (even this doesn't always seem to work for me).
Also, 4dos cannot complete file names if there is a ".." in the path.
