[comp.sys.ibm.pc] More on DDOS and Expanded Memory

Earlier I posted a request for help concerning locating an EMS/LIM 4.0
driver that would enable DoubleDOS 5.0 to use all available memory in my
PS/2 Model 60.

After exhausting all local sources of information available to me,
including IBM, I finally, in desperation, telephoned SoftLogic, the
company that markets DoubleDOS.

I was told that the only way DDOS will operate on expanded memory is if
there is exactly 256K on the motherboard, with all the rest on an
expansion card. A tech friend of mine informs me that this is not by any
means a standard hardware configuration.

Ergo, I have given up my quest, and must content myself with two
partitions sharing 640K of memory <sigh>.....

I run DESQview on my system, and support MSWindows on other systems. Both
of these programs specify in their documentation that in order to fully
utilize expanded memory that system memory should be disabled as low as
possible (down to 256K on AT-type systems) and then backfilled to 640K on
the expanded memory card. There is, at least with DESQview, a dramatic
difference in performance when installed in this manner.

I do regret the loss of use of the extra 384K of memory soldered onto the
motherboard. And it is also sad to lose 384K of expanded memory to fill in
what already exists. But it is worth it to me, so I live with it.

It was very easy to disable the extra motherboard memory by simply moving a
single jumper (as should be detailed in your system's user manual).
