[comp.sys.ibm.pc] whirwhirwhirBANG!

The 20Meg Everex HD I use on my 6 year old true-blue IBM PC is getting old,
and bad sectors are showing up frequently. Unfortunately, when a bad sector
appears during a file write, the only way to get out of the "Abort, Retry,
Fail?" from DOS is to abort, halting the program and losing any work.

1) What kind of tools exist to counter this? Is there a utility to check the
drive and mark bad sectors in the FAT without reformatting the drive? Is there
anything else that would remove them?

2) Another manifestation of this problem are damaged files. As they have bad
sectors in them, they cannot be read, and thus the disk cannot be backed up.
Are there any better backup programs (better than IBM's) that would get around
this problem?

If there are any PD tools out there that are reccomended, where could I get
them? (Please dont bother to say "Try a local BBS"; it's the first thing
I did! :-) Anonymous FTP from somewhere would be nice if possible.

Please reply as mail to sfn20715@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu. I will gladly summarize
for anyone who wants it.

Thanks in advance.
