What is the current wisdom of the net on "pc-compatible"
printers? I'm about to buy one, and it looks like dot-matrix
is it (laser printers seem too expensive for my hobby!). Any
great advantage of 24-pin over 9-pin? I've been eyeing the
Epson LQ series (500 maybe) or Panasonic (1124?). Any comments
on these specific devices??

I paid about $350 including shipping which is slightly more than the Epson LQ500, I think. I was also looking at the Epson LQ 500 since the price was about the same. I found the 1124 to have many more of the features I was looking for than the Epson LQ500 did, i.e. multiple paper paths and paper parking. The 1124 has 5 LQ fonts and 1 Draft Font and prints 192 cps draft and ~60 cps LQ. The advantages of 24 pin over 9 pin are great. 24 pin printers can print letter quality text and the graphics look great. I would strongly suggest spending slightly more to get a 24 pin printer, you won't be sorry you did. snuzs ...microsoft!trsvax!snuzs

These days, the prices are low enough on some 24 pin printers that there is practically no reason to buy a 9 or and 18 pin printer. I got my Epson LQ 500 for $349 and I've seen it cheaper since. I don't know much about the Panasonic, but from what I've seen and heard it is a very nice printer. It might be better than my Epson. I think PC magazine or one of the other PC mags did a review on printers a while back and they rated the Panasonic editor's choice. You might look around for that magazine and check it out. Well, graphics can be a problem. Unless the program has a driver
for the LQ series printers, your graphics will get "stretched".
A page of graphics on an FX printer is about 12-13 inches on an LQ.

Any comments >on these specific devices?? 24 pin dot matrix printers give you more letter quality-like characters and better resolution for DTP print outs. You can get some really nice quality printouts from 9 pins but considering how cheap the LQ500 is, I would buy the LQ500. That's what I did. The LQ500 does have problems with thick forms such as labels and envelopes but as long as you are careful things should work out.
