[comp.sys.ibm.pc] VGA card info. wanted

mwilcox@pcocd2.intel.com (Mike Wilcox ~) (06/20/89)

I am interested in buying a VGA card and have a few questions:

Am I correct in assuming that i need 512K video ram for 800x600x256
colors? Which of the cards support this mode? which include the most
drivers for this mode? Will my original NEC multisync monitor support
this mode?

Thanks for any info. you can provide.

Video 7, Orchid and Paradise all offer a VGA card that supports
this mode. All also offer VGA cards that do NOT support this
mode so verify you are buying the right model VGA card. Yes you
do need 512K RAM to actually USE this option. With some cards
256K of RAM is standard and 512K is an extra cost option.

The reviews I have read indicate the Paradise cards are the most
compatible. According to the specs, the original NEC multisync
does not support 800x600 resolution. OTOH I have seen people
get away with it on the older mulitsync monitors. Try it out.
Paradise and Video 7 have the most drivers with their cards
as far as I know.
