[comp.sys.ibm.pc] PS + NLQ fonts merged in MS Word with Citizen/Epson printer

bob@omni.com (Bob Weissman) (06/23/89)

Those of you using the Epson FX printer configuration EPSONFX.PRD under
Microsoft Word 4.0 will have noticed that there is a "near letter quality"
font called NLQ and a proportionally spaced font called PS, but there is
no proportionally spaced near letter quality font. I don't know about you,
but this is how I've always wanted to be able to print documents whose
appearance is important.

I don't actually have an Epson, but rather a Citizen 120D (possibly the
world's cheapest printer, but it works great) which emulates the Epson FX.
The Citizen, at least, allows you to specify NLQ and PS independent of each
other.

I've therefore hacked together a CITIZEN.PRD file, using MAKEPRD, which
contains a font called "PSNLQ", which is proportionally spaced and near
letter quality. I simply took the PS font description and added the NLQ
escape code and made a new font out of it. It works fine.

The problem is that the character spacings are now a little off; i.e., the
spacings provided for the PS font are all wider than the spacings for my
new PSNLQ font.

This all leads to the following two questions.

1. Does anyone have a set of character widths which are known to be correct
for a Citizen 120D in PS+NLQ mode? If so, please send them.

2. Does anyone want my CITIZEN.PRD file or instructions on how to create
it (or diffs from the text version of EPSONFX.PRD)?
