Welcome to a new service of Macro Computer Solutions. This bi-
weekly column is intended to let the computing public know about a
few of the latest events in the computer industry as well as
providing a forum for the exchange of hints and tips on how to get
the maximum out of various application software products.

        486 Desktop Power

IBM has recently announced the availability of a '486 daughter card
for their Model 70 PS/2 line of computers. Installation of the
card can be accomplished in a matter of minutes and doubles the
performance of the computer when compared to a '386 system operat-
ing at 33mhz. IBM hopes to offer similar products for the Model 50
and 80 in the very near future. Hold on to your hats ladies and
gentlemen, the race has already begun!

        WordPerfect 5.0

Defining a macros in WordPerfect can save the user from repeating
multiple keystrokes over and over again. At times it is prudent to
define a temporary macro rather assigning a permanent function key
        or key word for it.

Choose <CTRL><F10> to start the macro definition process, but hit
<ENTER> when prompted for the macro's name. According to the
WordPerfect manual, 'temporary' macros are not saved. However,
investigation revealed that the 'temporary' macro is actually kept
on disk in a file called WP{WP}.WPM. You can now rename this file
and edit the macro for future use.

                                      ------

        PC-FOCUS

At times it is advantages to have the user execute FOCEXECs with
differing default environments specifying directories that are to
hold temporary and working files. This is especially the case when
there are 'live' sets of data and other directories containing data
used only for testing of applications.

The file PROFILE.FEX contains setup information of the user's
environment. Normally the content of PROFILE.FEX in the current
default directory specifies the environment. Calling FOCUS with
the following parameter increases the flexibility of the product:

          FOCUS /PROFILE=USERPRO.FEX

Of course this option can be 'hidden' from the casual user by
calling the FOCUS database manager through a command file.

                                      ------

This concludes our first edition of 'MCS Tidbits & Hints'. If you
have an opinion about the material presented here or just want to
