I have some bucks and a dream...
I want to develop C code on a laptop with the following
modest (I hope) minimum requirments:
o PC-compatible laptop - with option to install 1mb for ramdisk.
o Works with a "car lighter" adapter (for my Van, actually)
o 20meg, < 30ms harddisk
o C compiler and development tool set, with one VITAL attribute:
When I munge my pointers and write random characters to random
memory locations, there is NO WAY the system will crash; and
hopefully, I will get a version of the "memory fault - core
dumped" message (I never thought that that was a friendly
message until I started developing on PCs, and now I yearn to
see it followed by a prompt prompt!)
o the simplest debugger that need only be "smart" enough to
tell me the function (icing if it tells the source code line
number) responsible for the bad write (ala the
"unix sdb 't' sub command").
I already have MKS, (with vi), and MicroSoft C 5.0 compiler, if
these can be part of the solution.
If this dream entails a 386/laptop, I am game; but, of course,
I would prefer to get the cheapest CPU, software tools set,
as long as the dream is fulfilled.
If this is possible on, say, a Toshiba 1200HD, using some software
tools, I would be very happy to hear it.
Thanks for your ruminations!
