I have tried to install a spare HD on the Zenith Data System (286) machine, but I can not get it to work. The spare hard drive, the original IBM XT 10M drive, 306 cylinders, ship zone 305, precomp 128, 4 heads, 17 sectors, capacity 10Meg. I do not have a schematic diagram for it. It has a drive-select jumper with 4 possible selections. The installed hard drive, a Miniscribe hard drive, 615 cylinders, ship zone 663, precomp 128, 4 heads, 17 sectors, capacity 21Meg. I do not have a schematic diagram to it either. It has a drive-select jumper with 7 possible selections, labelled 1 - 7. The controller is the original Zenith data system part. I use a cable with the IBM type of twist, therefore C: and D: must carry the same drive-select setting. Thank you for any help you may have. I also have a 286 Zenith with two HDs installed ( I installed them!)
>From what I know, you do not use 'TWIST RIBBON CABLE' for HDs. They
have a common straight ribbon cable. Yes, I am currently looking at
the owner manual and the HD common cable does not have a twist. If
you can not get the drive to select properly this could be the problem,
but do be sure to set you jumper/dip switches correctly for addressing!
