[comp.sys.ibm.pc] How do you get "safe" power failures

wss@cs.nott.ac.uk (William Shu) (07/05/89)

Sorry if this is not the right group. I am not sure where to send this
----
Does anyone know how to detect imminent power failure a micro (PS2 Model 30 with
hard disk) and take panic actions to avoid things like corrupting a disk?
The ideas I have got so far are: 1) To have an uninteruptible power supply (UPS)
unit. This is not practical as (a) a good one is costly (pounds 750 +) and
(b) an UPS only defers the problem for a while.
2) Buy a bigger machine with the facility installed. This too is out of the
question.

Has anyone else faced the problem? How was it solved?

Is there any hardware interrupt that detects power failure, from which a
software/hardware recovery action (eg. a dump of registers etc. on to
a hard disk) con be initiated? Can an ordinary user have access to this.
Are there any hardware accessories that can be attached?
How does one go about it. The slightest bit of information is appreciated.
Please Assume that the machine is operated in an area where there is frequent
power failure *AND* there is little or no power backup. Also assume that a
small loss of data is acceptable -- but not a corrupt disk/disk crash.
