[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Using 5.25 diskdrive

wss@cs.nott.ac.uk (William Shu) (07/06/89)

I have 5.25inch floppies (1.2Meg DS/HD) which I would like to read on an
IBM PS/2 Model 30 (hard disk version). I inquired about a disk drive that
could read such densities/formats and was met with questions about their
reliability. Futhermore, no-one seems to know exactly what is involved in
physically connecting the (external) disk-drive to the Machine.
Some maintain I need a separate power supply unit but others think a cable
from the PS/2 will do; no-one seems to be sure if I need a card or not.

With questions on the reliability of such drives, I am now considering buying
a copier of 5.25inch diskettes (at 1.2Meg) to 3.5inch (at 720Kb). However,
no-one seems to have heard of such a thing! To make matters worse, my
5.25inch diskettes have been shipped to -- well, almost literally to --
Timbouctou :-) and so I do not have immediate access to them.

Can anyone help? Have you had similar difficulties? Your experiences/comments
will be appreciated.
