[comp.sys.ibm.pc] I need faster keyboard action!!

jbjones@marlin.NOSC.MIL (John B. Jones) (07/07/89)

Does anyone know how to speed the keyboard up without using a TSR? Is
it something I can tweak in command.com? I do a lot of lotus, and I
get tired of the cursor plodding...

Now I understand your problem! [He posted a little different question in
another newsgroup].

Your keyboard is already fast enough. It is interrupt driven, whereby the
characters you enter are placed into a buffer. I'll admit the buffer is
small (which is why I use kbfix2 for a larger buffer), but that isn't the
reason for the reaction time.

The speed is a result of your CPU speed and the 1-2-3 program. You will need
a faster computer. If you have one of the 4.77 MHz 8088 type machines,
Lotus 1-2-3 is very slow. Now, on a Compaq 386/20, it is another story.
Because of the speed of the computer and the Lotus 1-2-3 program, it just
can't get around in the program soon enough to service the keyboard buffer.

A hint here regarding 1-2-3. Turn off auto-calculation mode. Normally 1-2-3
is set to always recalculate the spreadsheet whenever you change to a new
cell. Turn this off. Then when you get all your numbers entered, or you
need to see an update, you press the F9 key to recalculate the spreadsheet.
If this is part of your problem, give this idea a try. It worked for me
before I had a faster CPU.
