[comp.sys.ibm.pc] HELP! Diskette drive

russ@prism.gatech.EDU (Russell Shackelford) (07/11/89)

I hate to be making a habit of this, but here I am with another emergency:

have got a 20mhz 386 clone, with a 1.2 in A and a 1.44 in B.

initially, the box was only running at 16mhz, but i found the unconnected
wire, connected it, and now things are hunky-dory...

...EXCEPT....

all the sudden i've got demons in the ctrlr/diskette drives!

specifically, with EITHER drive, attempt to read from them result it:

(a) USUALLY: brief ok-ness followed by a drive-not-ready msg;

(b) OCCASIONALLY: a bad FAT msg.

attempts to format reliably give a drive not ready msg.

Question: does this mean that the spiffy 1:1 interleave disk ctrlr is
          dying?

Question: might it be that the ctrlr (1:1) and/or the board (386 at 20)
are going too fast for things to work? if so, what's the fix?

it may be coincidence, but problems did NOT occur with the 1.2 until i
upped the MB speed to the 20 for which it is rated; i dunno about the
1.44 cause i never used it prior to the speed-up.

any and all help will be greatly appreciated!!!!!

thanks
