My PS/2 Model 50 has developed some problems, and I was hoping someone in net.land could offer advice about what to do. The IBM 8513 Monochrome display on it works with other computers, and the IBM keyboard appears to be okay (I have no way of confirming this.) The last time I used it, the 20 Meg HD and 1.44 Meg floppy drive both worked fine. When I turn on the power, the fan starts up, the speaker clicks (good news, yes?) and the hard drive emits the usual startup sounds. However, numbers (the usual "128K...256K...384K...") do not appear on the screen and absolutely nothing else happens; the speaker does not emit any beeps and none of the drive lights come on. The IBM repair manual says "Have the unit repaired." Mucho Gracias, IBM. Other advice includes "Reseat the chips", "Check the connections" (already done), "Reinsert any cards", "Call IBM" (I dont know the number). Anyone with any advice is strongly urged to mail it to me or post it in comp.sys.ibm.pc. Thanks in advance. sfn20715@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu or (217)-485-5541. (Ask for Steve Norton)

[PC monitor dead, monitor works on another PC, you heard the machine beep and boot, but no display] This usually means that the video adapter card is out.

According to my PS/2 family repair guide, it sounds as if you have a power supply failure. The IBM tech just dropped by too, and agreed, but said this: Try to reseat the power supply. You will have to remove 3 screws to do this. If that fails, chances are rather good that it is the PS unit and it will have to be replaced. If you really want to check it, take it out completely, and check the various pins for proper voltage if possible. Here are the correct voltages for the power connector. 1 3 5 15 | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 2 V Dc Minimum Maximum Ground pin Pin -9.0 -15.0 2 1 +9.0 +15.0 2 3 +3.7 +6.2 2 15 If any of these voltages are incorrect, replace the power supply. There could be a few other problems, but like I mentioned before, this should be the problem. Let me know if you still have other problems. (By Email to KDM101@PSUVM.PSU.EDU / PSUVM.BITNET)
