[comp.sys.ibm.pc] V20 vs. 8088

d88-eli@nada.kth.se (Erik Liljencrantz) (07/18/89)

I once had a XT (noname 4.77 MHz clone) which I upgraded with a V20.
It worked fine. Norton SI (version 3.0 those days) gave index 1.6 with
V20 (1.0 without), but that didn't mean 60% increase of performance in
average applications...

At the assembly language level the V20 is much faster at
MUL & DIV (at least 10 times faster!!!)
Shiftinstructions (V20 contains a barrelshifter which is FAST)
Memory moves (REP MOVSW moved more than twice as fast on my system)

Later on I replaced the V20 with a 8MHz 286 Turbo card (from Personal
Computer Support Group, PCSG), and that even outperformed some real 8MHz
AT systems...
