[comp.sys.ibm.pc] PC Tools 5.5

lowood@lindy.Stanford.EDU (Henry Lowood) (07/18/89)

I just received a mailer from Central Point Software offering an upgrade
from PC TOOLS 5.0 to 5.5 for $20. Has anybody purchased 5.5 and is it
worth the cost of an upgrade? Or should I wait?

I apologize if this has been discussed already. I have been off the
net for four months.

It is DEFINETELY worth the upgrade.
I am using it right now to login to the SUN with word perfect 5.0 in suspension
the resident vt100, vt52 and ansi terminal alone is worth the $20 upgrade..
The macro editor works very well and the new install scripts saves disk space
if you don't want their disk recover utilities (I still prefer norton over
PCtools for disk recover).
The desktop now works faster (compared with 5.1, which was too slow for the
V20 machine which I am running) in loadi. Before this version I still prefer
sidekick over desktop as resident but now I am using exclusively PCTools.

Just an opnion from a satisfied customer

I downloaded it from their BBS for free (it's even a local call from here). It
is worth the $20.00. Their main claim is network support -- they are going
after the big business market, and have shot up their prices (list is up >50%)
to match. For the common user, they have added an HP-11C scientific calculator,
VT52 VT100 and ANSI terminal emulation to Desktop, and have smoothed the
operation of pcshell. Also application launching works now (it didn't used to
for me).

Even at the new price, PC-Tools is a must-have bargain.

I just received a copy myself, along with a raft of promotional
literature about What Makes It So Different (see what you get
for calling and asking the company questions??).

I'd be happy to summarize what I've gotten by email; just write.
If more than ten write, I'll post. I haven't had time to crack the
box yet, but when I do, I'll be looking to see if the extra $$ is
worth it.

Hi everyone,

Good news for anyone who wants to upgrade from 5.0 or 5.1 to 5.5!
It costs $20 if you want them to send you disks and docs. If you
want to get the software yourself (from Central Point's BBS) it
is *free*! That's right, free! I did it myself this Sunday.
Call the CPS BBS at 503-690-6650. I came in at 2400. I assume
other speeds (1200, at least) would work, too. N-8-1. The whole
deal is about 974K, as I recall. Several protocols available,
including ZMODEM, which I used (~1:15 at 2400, over PCPursuit).
It is Pursuitable out of D/ORPOR (Portland, Oregon).

P.S. It won't do you any good unless you already have PCTools,
so don't bother trying any monkey business! (But they do have general
info on their products, company, etc, online, so it may be of
interest to non-PCTool-niks.) Also, they offer technical support
and technical data online.

Hmm, would some kind soul be willing to send me a (terse, but complete)
breakdown of just what PCTools is? In particular, what does it do and
how does it fit in vis-a-vis Sidekick, DESQview, Norton Utilities...

E-mail is surely best; I'll summarize if it's worthwhile.

many thanks,
bob, mon.

does anybody know if it works with 4.01 now?? My version looks like
and acts like it's compatible with 4.01, but when i perform some
functions, like renaming a subdirectory, it creates desaster.
