[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Upgrading an original IBM PC

tgl@zog.cs.cmu.edu (Tom Lane) (07/22/89)

A friend of mine has an original IBM PC, vintage '83 or so;
8088, two floppy drives, probably just 256K memory (I didn't check).
What are his options for upgrading this machine with a hard disk
and/or more memory? Are there power supply or ROM BIOS limitations?

Recommendations for hard disks would be particularly appreciated.
An internal hard disk would have to be the "hard card" style, as the
floppies fill their area completely. Something in the 20-30 MB range
would be fine.

And oh yes -- he's still running DOS 2.10. Will he need to upgrade
to a newer DOS to run a hard disk?

Please reply by e-mail; I'll post a summary if anyone asks.
