Ladies and Gentlemen of the net: I would like to apologize for the placement of my article on the use of firearms in net.general. It seems I offended a significant fraction of of the net population by placing it there. It was not intended to of- fend. Please allow me to explain. The discussion to which I referred started out in net.general about 2 weeks ago, when a person posted an article titled, "The wheels of jus- tice turn slowly ..." after which an article appeared in response to it which took an argumentative point of view on the subject. I felt I should respond, but I knew that net.general was not quite the place. Therefore, I put my article in both net.general and net.flame, with a note in the article explaining that I was trying to move the discussion permanently to net.flame. Really, folks, it *was* a serious attempt to move the discussion to net.flame. (Does such a "move" protocol exist?) Again, I apologize to all those I offended. This is written exclusively in response to the mail I have received. I haven't even seen the news yet today, having been gone over the Labor Day weekend. ============== Karl Kleinpaste ===============

I would be interested in knowing if you were forced by your employers to post this "apology". I think these disclaimers are ridiculous! Is there anyone on the net stupid enough to believe that articles posted by people are officially being posted by the employer, or that the employee can speak for the employer? Anyone who thinks that is an idiot! I suspect some lawyer or would-be lawyer got worried about the legal consequences of some flame, since the computer is owned by them. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? What percentage of net traffic could be saved if these disclaimers were deleted?

I agree that the whole idea of an employers disclaimer is a bit silly. But I can see that some lawyers could go round getting worried (or rather getting company management worried -they have got to justify their existence somehow). Maybe we could update netiquette so that a disclaimer is to always be assumed -unless explicitly stated. To everyone in netland, PLEASE forgive my posting of test to these nets. I was successful in posting to ba.test, but had no luck posting my request to either net.general or net.auto. It took some effort on my part and questions of several co-workers before I was able to get ANYTHING posted to these newsgroups. Once again, my apologies. Tom

When I posted my article on VM systems on the net I only wanted people to know that when talking about systems on the net they should not exclude VM, which they usually do. My "flame" on Unix was so preposterous I thought everyone would see the humor with which it was intended. If anyone was *truly* offended (think carefully, were you offended or did you just want to flame?) then I truly apologize to that person. But in these times of wars and inflations and all that, don't you think we could use a sense of humor? I do. Laugh at life and life won't hurt you as much. Ok? ------- Michael S.
