[comp.sys.ibm.pc] PC-Brand 20Mhz 286, anyone?

durham@cme.nbs.gov (James H. Durham) (07/26/89)

Just recently, I saw an ad for the PC-Brand 20Mhz 286 for $999 or something
close to that... It is a base system with 512K... blah blah blah. Anyways,
(and I'm sorry if I'm re-treading a worn out subject) since I am in the
market for a speedy 286, is there anything wrong with this system? I do
recall some people had problems with PC-brand... How about this particular
unit? Any comments on the company, the warranty, or the machine would be
greatly appreciated. If mail sent to durham@cme.nist.gov bounces, please
notify me through this message base, but it should work (I am only a novice,
you know). I will summarize the comments, then post them...

Thank you for any help you can give.

Check and make sure that your CPU is really one of the high speed 286's. Only
AMD and Harris make high speed 286's. And only one (as of March '89 issue of
Byte) makes the 20 MHz 80286, I forget which one. If your CPU is an AMD or
Harris, chances are the board is ok. I have heard of DTK using 10 MHz 286's
in their 12 MHz/0 wait 286 boards.
