When my pc-clone is powered up, my 2400 baud hayes-compatible modem insists on picking up the phone (hoping to get a carrier). I don't want this; I want to be able to have the computer on and pick up the phone and respond to voice messages. How do I fix this? Sorry if this is too bush-league. Please reply by email if you have an answer to chan@portal.com. Thanks, Jeff C.

Thanks to those who answered my query about disabling the autoanswer feature of my Hayes-compatible modem. It seems that there is a modem- internal register S0 that controls the number of rings before the modem picks up. I haven't tried yet, but the consensus was that setting this register to 0 by using "echo ATS0=0 > COMn", where n is the modem's com port number, should disable this. Others also suggested seeking out a dip switch which may do the same thing in hardware. For now I will try the former, and will investigate the latter when I re-find the modem documentation. Again, many thanks to those who responded! Jeff C.
