[comp.sys.ibm.pc] News style WD1003 controller ?

john@wa3wbu.UUCP (John Gayman) (08/02/89)

I ran across a new style WD1003 controller the other day that I wonder
if anyone knows about. It is marked WD1003V-MMI. Its a 2/3 card like
the WD1003-WA and is a hard disk only controller. It had a greatly
reduced chip count with only about 8-9 surface mounted components. Does
anyone know if this is just an updated WD1003-WA or does it have some
special application ? Thanks.

The V series is an update of the older models with the same base
number (100X). I believe they are track buffered, at least the 1006 is.
As I recall the suffixes, the ones ending in SR2 are HD+FD, the MM1 is
HD only. There are SR1 and SR2 I believe, but I don't have my notes
here.

Only the 1006 series are track cached; the 1003s are not. The remainder of
your info is correct; these are the "new" model numbers and all are heavily
endowed with the surface-mount components.
