[comp.sys.ibm.pc] InSite or other 20 MB floppies

caromero@phoenix.Princeton.EDU (C. Antonio Romero) (08/02/89)

Some months ago there was some talk in the trade press about a company
called InSite that was working on some kind of optically-tracking
magnetic drive that would put 20MB on a 3.5 inch disk (with tracks
etched in by lasers). Drive costs were to be ~$300, and disks ~$15
each. At last report they were starting their beta testing, back in
April or May...

Originally the product was supposed to reach market around now, but
there doesn't seem to be any sign of it... does anyone know what
happened to these folks? Any information on when these might become
available would be appreciated.

I saw a couple of articles earlier this year in PC-Resource that talked about
this technology. It was in the "New Products" column, but I can't seem to
find the two issues that the articles were in.
The first talked about the 20MB floppies, using a laser-operated servo unit
to position the head. The second, which was announced the next month, used a
technique called "Double Tiered Tracking" to store up to 100MB of information
on the a 3.5" disk. The disk, as the 20MB version, needs to be specially
prepared, and costs ~$20. The drive was supposed to go for around $500.
I'll keep looking for the two magazines, and post more information when I
find them.
