[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Pipes in 4DOS shell don't work for me

burleigh@cica.cica.indiana.edu (Frank Burleigh) (08/09/89)

i don't understand something in the command.com replacement shell
4dos.com/4dos286.exe 2.21 w/ DOS 4.01: pipes don't seem to work
for me. the result of an attempt to pipe is shown by this:

        C:\BIN>dir | more
        Access denied "C:/\p1.$$$\p1.$$$\p1.$$$"
        C:\BIN>dir | \bin\more
        Access denied "C:/\p1.$$$\p1.$$$\p1.$$$\p1.$$$"
        C:\BIN>

this is the result no matter what 'more' i use, DOS' or not. in
this case the more is the one recently posted to c.b.i.p.

[the following may or may not be related.]

if i shell out of the running program, e.g., telix right now, i
will be dumped into command.com, as the secondary shell.

     C:\BIN>dir | more

     run-time error R6003
     - integer divide by 0

     C:\BIN>

however, 'dir | \bin\more' *does* work correctly. (yes, \bin is
in the path). running the system with straight DOS 4.01 works as
expected.

any ideas appreciated.

I have not run into this particular problem, but have had other
problems in the past. I called and the people at JP Software
were extremely helpful. Are you either in your 30-day trail
period, or have you registered yet? In either case, they are
ready to help you. If you don't have the address information,
here it is:

J.P. Software
P.O. Box 1470
E. Arlington, Ma. 02174

(617) 646-3975

BTW, I am a thoroughly happy registered user of 4DOS and have not
been having any problems. I only needed to use it for about
1 week before I decided to register. This is a well thought out
and executed product and is well worth the $50 shareware price
they are asking (includes printed manual and two free upgrades).
You can also get it for $35 for registration only, no manual
no upgrades. I am not connected in any way with J.P. Software in
any other that being a satisfied user.

I forgot to mention in my previous reply to this posting, I have
tried this command and have no problem with it. I am using
4dos286 2.21 and DOS 3.2, however. I have not upgraded to SOS
4.xx on purpose because 3.2 suits my needs and I don't want to
put up with all the shit people have been reporting with 4.01.
Seems that 4.01 is part of your problem.
