[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Rumors of poor performance of 3.5" drives in ATs

cjoslyn@bingvaxu.cc.binghamton.edu (Cliff Joslyn) (08/09/89)

I have an AT with a Toshiba 3.5" 720K drive. This same drive worked
fine on an XT, but here the performance is noticeably "sluggish".
Getting a directory takes about 2 sec to get the volume label, 2 sec to
get the directory name, 1 sec to list the files, and 2 sec to list the
bytes free. The same operation on the XT might take 3-4 secs
altogether. Copying a file takes about 5 sec, compared to 2 or 3 on an
XT.

I have a techie friend who's said he's seen very similar behavior in all
AT's he's installed 3.5" drives on (perhaps 6 or 7 altogether). There
are nor retries, data or seek errors, or any trouble with data
integrity.

What gives?

[problem with read/write speed on Toshiba 3.5" drives on an AT]

I have a Mitsumi drive: This drive has the drive itself and a separate
logic board between the drive and the controller. The Drive logic board
has a jumper to specify whether the drive is to be installed in an
XT or an AT. Check your drive. You may have a wrong jumper setting.
