Has anyone out there successfully installed a second hard disk in a real IBM AT with the original controller? We have a 512K motherboard and the original controller. The system bought with a 20MB full-size hard disk (type 2) installed. I want to add a Seagate ST225 as a second hard disk. This would seem easy enough but nothing works. First I tried the usual stuff. I removed the terminator on the ST225, connected the appropriate cables, ran setup and configured the second hard disk as a type 2 drive. All I got were hard disk 1 failures. Then I remembered to change the jumper on the back of the ST225. A little better, the drive light was acting a bit better, but still nothing. At this point I thought I should try just the ST225 so I disconnected the original disk, a Computer Memories Inc., put the terminator back in the Seagate and reset the jumper, and reran Setup. Then I got hard disk 0 failures. The reasonable thing to think is that maybe the drive is bad, so I went home and got my own ST225 from one of my machines and tried to connect it right up. I got the exact same failures. One funny thing, when the disk test are done at startup, the controller light flashes but the ST225 light does not. That tells me that the drive select is not right but I took the drive right out of my working PC so why aren't the controller and disk talking to each other? I'm sure I'm missing something. Is there something weird about the controller shipped with AT's, or maybe the BIOS. The BIOS allows 15 drive types. I have a list from my Phoenix BIOS and I assume the low drive types are the same. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
