[comp.sys.ibm.pc] WYSE-700 drivers for Windows/286, /386, PM

mitsu@well.UUCP (Mitsuharu Hadeishi) (08/03/89)

I just spoke with Wyse Technical and they told me some
interesting things about their monitors and drivers:

There is currently Windows/286 support for Wy-700 and 7190
monitors. The 7190, in addition, has a new driver called the TIGA
driver which is a specification TI came up with for 340x0-based
displays. There is currently a Windows/286 driver for TIGA, which runs
over the Wyse TIGA driver making Windows/286 some TEN TIMES FASTER
on the 7190 than with the old driver (because it is now using the 34010).

There will not be a driver for the current version of Windows/386.
However, there will be one for the next version of /386, coming out "soon".
Likely there will also be a TIGA driver for that version from Microsoft,
meaning all 34010-based displays (including the 7190) will have BLAZING FAST
GRAPHICS under this "new" ultra-souped-up version of Windows/386.

PM drivers are in beta test for both monitors.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I spent hours over several months talking to local Wyse offices, distributor
support, etc. trying to find out about drivers for WY700 and Windows/386.
(My copy of Windows/386 is a wasted pile of paper and iron oxide insofar as
I am concerned if I have to run it CGA!). The standard answer I always got
was "It's going into beta test in about 2 weeks now.". The last answer was
"Not working on a driver and no plans to do so."

Now if I really knew when the new version of Windows/386 would be available
(and upgrade prices ...). Will the new drivers be on the distributions
disks for Windows/386??

(I had just about resigned myself to trying to write my own driver and
had obtained copies of the DDK and BAK from MS to do just that. I've got
better things to do if the drivers will be available.)

The trick is not to call the main Wyse number, but to call
one of their technical offices. I don't think I can give out that number,
but you might try perusing Information around there to get other numbers for
Wyse Technology.
