[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Unix and 386 PC's

talvola@janus.berkeley.edu (Erik Talvola) (08/17/89)

I posted this earlier to comp.unix.i386 and didn't get many responses,
maybe I will get more here.

I am in the market for a 386 based PC clone which will have the following
characteristics:

		a) Will run Unix - preferably Interactive Unix. From people's
comments, it appears that Interactive's is the best Unix
		   with the best X11 support.

		b) Will support at least an 80387, and preferably the
		   Weitek 3167 also.

		c) At least 20 MHz - probably 25 MHz though.

		d) Supports at least 8 megs of memory - preferably 16 megs.

		e) Will support an Orchid ProDesigner Plus board (because I
		   already have one)

		f) Can be bought at a minimum level (i.e., no video board,
no modem, no hard drive, etc.). I like to build my
		   systems up from scratch.

So far, I have only had one recommendation - the Mylex board. If anyone
has any information on any other motherboards, or more info on the Mylex
board, please send mail. If you can, also give addresses/phone numbers so
I can contact the companies as well.

Also, for the Unix, I have the following requirements:

		a) X11R3 (or R4!) support for the Orchid ProDesigner Plus
board. I believe Interactive supports this - does anyone
		   else?

		b) System V, release 4 as soon as possible - I have done
virtually all my programming in a BSD environment and
would like the BSD features of S5R4.

Thanks for any information in advance. If I get sufficient responses,
I will post a followup message, and, if not, will forward copies of any
information by E-mail to those interested.
