[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Modem Surge Protection

nts0302@dsacg3.UUCP (Bob Fisher) (08/17/89)

Half of my modem is dead. The half that talks to the phone line.
It talks to the CPU ok, but it can't hear anything on the phone.

It worked well for several years and I haven't changed anything.
When I try to dial, it doesn't wait for the dial tone but immediately
throws the numbers out on the line. If I dial manually, it doesn't
hear the carrier from the modem at the other end.

A long time ago I heard that there could be power spikes on the
phone line (as opposed to the 115v AC power source - I have a surge
protector there). The condition of my modem would tend to bear this
out. I assume that I took a hit thru the phone line and fried one of
the chips on that end of the board.

I have seen advertisements for modem protectors. Do they really
work? If so, does anyone have a recommendation for which one to buy?
