Is there a package available that allows for transparent use of disk or
expanded memory on the PC? I'm thinking of something that replaces or
embellishes malloc/free to provide a virtual memory capability. We have
Heap Expander from Tool Makers which does this, but it is not transparent to
the application in that you have to make an explicit call before
dereferencing a pointer to dynamic memory (in case a page fault is
required). I have also heard of something from Rational Technologies (?)
which runs a standard DOS program in protected mode, keeping a control
program loaded in low memory which handles DOS service and switching the
processor between modes. The drawback here for us is that it only works on
286-class machines or better. Are there any others? Thanks for any info!
