I have two questions about the Olivetti M24/AT&T 6300. 1. I was told before that a NEC v30 will replace the 8086. However, a friend's PC is v30 based, and he is certain it is a square chip. I have examined my 8086 and it is certainly rectangular. Is there some specific v30 I must order? What's the part number for a rectangular v30. 2. Does any one have experience with the Olivetti Z8000 coprocessor card? What OS does it run? What software is available for it? What are the costs? -- Alexander Pruss, at one of: Department of Applied Mathematics, Astronomy, Mathematics, or Physics University of Western Ontario pruss@uwovax.uwo.ca pruss@uwovax.BITNET A5001@nve.uwo.ca

I've had one in my Olivetti M24 for over 2 years now with no problems. I think your friend was refering to another chip. I've got 2 "v30s" from diverse sources, and they are identical. > 2. Unless things have changed, it only runs the Olivetti PCOS. This was the OS for the M20 which they tried to market before IBM took the business market over. There are alot of M20s still out there, but they all seem to be doing tax software (at least here in Germany). Stuff is still pretty expensive for it, and I don't recall it being particularly interesting in the context of what's out today. The M24 includes all sorts of capabilities to handle the graphics modes for the M20. Unless it's very cheap, and you really like to tinker with developing software yourself, it might be a deal to pass on. Hope this helps! Bob -- Bob George, Unter den Eichen 97, 1000 Berlin 45, W.
