[comp.sys.ibm.pc] HP Deskjets $350. Is it worth it?

gatesl@netcom.UUCP (Lee Gates) (07/08/89)

Hi, well I have found a place in Menlo Park, (CA) that says they
will have HP Deskjets for $350! I was quite impressed. But I have a few
questions for people who have had to deal with them, either as owners, or
slaves to (use at work). I am interested in the exact differences between
the deskjet, and the plus. I called up HP and they said that the plus was
much better, although I could only distinguish that the plus was

	1. 5x, and 2x, faster in graphics, and text modes respectively.
(this is achieved by the sped up linefeeds and all other
		 non-printing actions, she said).

	2. Has 3 built in fonts:
		courier
		courier italics
		courier landscape
(and 10 total when you count each diff pitch as
			 a font).

	3. Supports landscape while the + doesn't.

	4. Has 256k buffer opposed to 128k on the old deskjet.
(I am not too sure about this one, HELP).

	5. Uses the same old cartriges, and could expect 500-900
pages per cartrige, depending on draft, NLQ, graphics....
Hence, costs about the same for equivalent # of printed
pages to be printed on a laser, disregarding orig. cost
	    of machine.

Well, I guess what I want to know is if anyone has had any problems
with jamming, etc. And if the only real diff is speed and landscape. I
will be returning to college in the fall, and won't be needing much graphics.
If I do, I can always do it at the library, so I only need LQ printing in
text situations, and quiet has to be nice, doesn't it?

Thank you for your support, and if I get a lot of replies,
I will summarize and post, or you could just post to the
net since I haven't seen this topic in the last 6 months
I have been keeping up, although I may have missed it.

RE: HP's Inkjet Color printer(s).

I am in need of a wide carrige printer with the Ink Jet Capabilities. It
does NOT have to be a HP. Any of them will do as long as:
        1. The are 132 characters wide
        2. Have same or similar output as the 80 character wide HP I have
seen demonstrated at various computer outlets.

I would appreciate ANY replies, help, in this matter. The 80 wide will
just not work for my application. Hope someone out there has a
source(answer) for me.

Thanks
