It seems like there was a discussion several months ago regarding gadgets to switch incoming calls to the phone/answering machine or to the computer/fax depending on whether the gadget detected certain patterns in the transmission. I don't know much about the way data is transmitted on phone lines so I'm not sure how this works. I just saw an ad in DAMARK for a "FAXTEL II" gadget, that works with FAX machines that use a 1850 Hz. answer tone. It sounds interesting, but I wonder if it works with a modem, so data calls would be sent to the computer...or is there a similar device that works with modems? I would really like to find a way to do this, since this fall I will be getting a 2nd phone line at home for computer and business use, and would like to be able to dial up on a modem and login to my 386, but still have voice calls go to the answering machine. Anyone know an inexpensive and relatively painless way to do this? Any help will be appreciated, and I will post a summary if requested.
