It would help if you told us which virus, what the symptoms are, etc. It's possible that some virus out there either attacks HD disks or uses them to spread (in fact, I'm sure there is at least one), but you haven't given us any details. Remember, there are *lots* of different strains of virus out there... BTW, there's no such thing as a 5.25" 1.44MB disk. There are 5.25" 1.2MB disks, and 3.5" 1.44MB disks.
