I saw mention somewhere about a version 3.0 of Windows. This new version of Windows is supposed to support proportional screen fonts and have better-looking windows. Does anyone have anymore information than the above? Like when will version 3.0 be released and will it run on a 286 machine? Dzung Hoang hoang@comus.cs.tulane.edu tulane!comus!hoang

From PC Magazine: [talking about Windows 3.0] "The MS-DOS Executive is being replaced with a more sophisticated and intuitive interface for starting programs and performing file management. To conquer the memory limitations under real mode, Windows 3.0 will use protected mode to run well-behaved Windows applications. Support for protected mode will allow Windows programs to transparently use memory above the 640K DOS limit, giving them much more elbowroom and significantly improved performance." "The new releases of both flavors of Windows, due by year's end, will show dramatic improvements. If you're wavering, Windows 3.0 will change your mind. As executive editor Bill Howard quips, 'It's that good.'" Windows 3.0 is purported to support full protected-mode Windows apps on both 286 and 386 machines. That means large multimegabyte applications and data all running at blinding speed. Any well-behaved Windows app will run under Windows 3.0, or be easily converted. Basically you'll have the power of OS/2 PM yet have the application selection of Windows (including Excel, Word for Windows, and a number of other Windows apps). Developers will be able to develop for a platform that will run on machines from 640K 286s to 16MB 486 machines.

From lotus magazine: Microsoft and IBM are reportedly working on a way to let Presentation Manager run unmodified Windows applications. However, this is not expected to happen until late 1990. . q -- Thomas Kunselman {rutgers, uunet}!ukma!tek Office of Institutional Research bitnet: tek@ukma.bitnet Kentucky State University internet: tek@ms.uky.edu Frankfort, KY 40601 Educate, Don't Legislate!
