[comp.sys.ibm.pc] WHat happened to Norton's SA?

jdm@hodge.UUCP (jdm) (09/02/89)

I just happened to notice that the SA (Screen Attributes)
program, which was present in every version of the Norton
Utilities up to and including 4.0, is missing from 4.5!

Why was SA removed from distribution?

It sort of wasn't removed.

For some reason (I can't figure out why) they decided that the SA command
was batch file enhancement command and therefore they decided to
include the support for the command in the BE command.

The current usage is the same as the previous usage with the
exception that it is preceded by a BE as follows:

BE SA [bright|bold|Underline] foreground [ON background]

The only possible reason that I can think of is that the distribution
diskette space was getting real tight so they combined the commands
to reduce the amount of disk space used up. I haven't reviewed my
diskettes to see if this is true so who knows (or really cares).

SA was removed because the NCC Norton Control Center program provides the
same function and more.

The SA part of Nortons has been moved into the Batch Enhancer program
(BE). I believe the sytntax is the same but you call it using 'BE SA
[params]'.

Maybe so, but not as conveniently.

Actually, SA has been incorporated in full into BE (Batch Enhancer). Just
type BE SA [old SA command] and all will be as it was.

Definitely not as conveniently. But then again, you can use Batch Enhancer
as well, and just type BE SA whatever, and you get the same thing...

...probably because it violates Norton's basic philosophy concerning screen
colors (which, incedentally, was lifted from Henry Ford):

"You can have Norton Utilities in any color you wish, so long as it's white
on blue."

...either he's color blind, or a jerk, one.

There are two ways to set colors in the Norton Utilities now, SA has been
moved to the batch enhancer, or you can use NCC.

To use the old SA just replace SA with BE SA, the options are the same.

To use NCC, call up NCC and play with the menues. You can save your
favorite setting to a file, and initialize from that file by doing a
NCC myfile /SETALL. (Press F2 to save settings in NCC).

Take another look at your documentation; the function of SA, along with
several other pre-4.5 programs, has been incorporated into BE (Batch
Enhancer), along with several new functions.

How many questions posted to this newsgroup are easily found in the
documentation, *if* the poster had it!?!? In other words, should I
spend my time answering questions for people that don't even have
the software licensed? Please note (hopefully) that I am not singling
out or attempting to accuse jdm specifically. After all, he may have just
ignored the new program (BE) while looking for old favorites (SA, etc.)
I am just using this particular question to see how you guys feel.
