[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Miniscribe 8450 vs ST1XX

SCVAX@kuhub.cc.ukans.edu (09/05/89)

I want to buy a medium sized/medium speed hard drive for my
pc clone. I've narrowed my choices to a Miniscribe 8450 (42
      mb, 45ms) or a Seagate product (ST-138 30mb, 40 or 28 ms or
      ST157 49mb, 40ms).

The Miniscribe seems to be a better deal per mb than the Seagates,
but is the quality/warranty/reputation any better or worse than
      the ST1XX drives.

      Please e-mail any/all opinions.

If you do decide to buy a Miniscribe 8450 (presumably the HardCard) make
sure you get the cylinder/heads etc info with it! I recently bought one
cheap ie minus everything including doc. It had been set up wrong &
I had to reformat it. I asked on the Net for info & was told that the
bios formatter should be told that it had 771 cylinders & 4 heads.
ie 771,4,771,128,11,3. The problem is that then FDISK (3.3) thinks its got
1023 cylinders & 4 heads!! (Oh yes its repeatable). I dont know why. I'm
having a lot of trouble with this disk! (No problems with a 3450 though)
I suppose I could try to find out if Miniscribe are in the UK.

The ST138R in another machine has no problems. You have to be careful
about the controller address if more than one controller is installled.
Does anybody know if I can run more than one disk off of the ST11R controller?
(curiosity).
