I have recently started playing with Vmos/3, a multitasking DOS system for 386's from StarPath Systems, 1-800-456-VMOS. It allows an almost unlimited number of DOS tasks to run simultaneously on a 386. Each task has 640K of memory and 32M of EMS memory, it swaps out to disk programs and data as necessary. The cost is $95.00 from Programmer's Shop 1800-421-8006. They have a 30 day money back return policy, a BBS for updates etc. The system seems to work as advertized, however it is very slow. I am running with a mimimal system 80386SX at 16 MHz, 2 Meg Ram, and AT speed HD and controller. My system clocks at about 6+ times the speed of a standard PC. When running under Vmos/3, it clocks at about twice the speed of a PC. I have not fully loaded the system with multiple DOS sessions running simultaneously, but the speed would probably approach a standard PC. In summary, it seems like a reasonable multitasking DOS system for those who really need multitasking. I would recommend the fastest possible 386 and disk system. StarPath's up comming Multi-user option might be much cheaper than PC MOS or Concurrent DOS. If you are interested, you can try it out for 30 days and decide. I plan to return my copy. Don't ask me technical questions about Vmos/3, call the company please. Ken Green -- Kendall B.
