I got a flyer from MKS announcing the new Toolkit version a couple of days ago. Has anyone tried it yet? Have they fixed the vi mode command line editing bugs? How well does the transient ksh work? Are there any restrictions on using it in the transient mode? What's the mailer look like (I assume it's compatible with Unix mailx since they gave it the same name), and is there any functionality to it under dos, ie. will it work with uupc? Is the tar Unix compatible? Roger -- Roger A. Cornelius rac@sherpa uunet!sherpa!rac

Transient ksh - the shell will optionally release much of the memory it is using when you execute a program. It reloads itself from disk upon term- nation of the called program. According to the flyer, this increases memory for your programs by 64K. As for the price: hold on to your hat... $249. Upgrade price is $69. regards, Larry -- Signed: Larry A. We just got our upgrade yesterday, and I've spent a little time fiddling with the transient shell. What it does is swap 64K worth of code into any address you like (the default is the highest available conventional RAM). After your application program exits, the remaining shell code looks at the RAM where the swap occured, and, if it passes a checksum, swaps it back. If it FAILS, the code will be reloaded from disk. As an option, you can instruct the shell to reload from an alternate disk file (which could be a copy of sh.exe on a ram disk). < As for the price: hold on to your hat... $249. Upgrade price is $69. Or, you could get it free :-), if you pay the annual maintenance fee to MKS. This is actually not a bad thing. We've gotten 3 "free" upgrades in the last 2 years, and all have included a typesettable manual (as part of our site license). There are lots of other new goodies in the toolkit as well, including mailx (?), a floating point version of awk, some POSIX tools, tar, the uucode brothers, and a few others. I like it, but then, I'm easily amused. < Signed: Larry A. Shurr (cbema!las@att.ATT.COM or att!cbema!las) (Note the clever disclaimer!)
