[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Data-base program recommendations wanted

I am volunteering to work out a data base for the local YMCA day care center. 
They have an old IBM portable PC and an Apple II. 
The objective of this program is to store and retrieve information of all 
the students in the center. The program that I know of that can do such 
a job is dBase II. However the local computer store asks for over $400 
to order one. The computers at the day care center were donated by people 
and we would like to have free or cheap softwares to equipt our devices
and to make the best use of them. If  anybody has suggestions
as to what software can best suit our purpose
and where we can get it free or cheaply, please E-mail to
