[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Printer prints double spaced...why?!?!?!?!?!

woolard@uns-helios.nevada.edu (Mike Woolard) (09/13/89)

I have a TRS-80 Line Printer VI that I now have hooked
up to my Laser XT with the standard Centronics printer cable.
Everything works fine except for one thing... Everything it
prints is double spaced (2 printed line feeds at each line of
single spaced text). Is there a remedy for this problem? I have
looked at the printer controls and do not see a switch to control
line spacing, so I am at odds as what to do at this point.

       Any suggestions ????????????????????????

Any and all replies that may be of
assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

   Mike Woolard

This is the second time I have seen a posting like this in recent months, so
I'll post the "cure": a small TSR that converts a CRLF sequence into a CR.
This program is useful for any early Radio Shack printer that did not have
a way of separating CR and LF actions and works by taking over the BIOS
interrupt. Programs that send data directly to the printer, or do graphics
on printers so equiped, will fail (Sorry!).

Tandy often lists their CR only setup as NL (New Line.) Check to see if
there is a switch that says NL=NL or similar. You generally want the
settings LF=LF and CR=CR. The problem is that the Tandy standard (before
MS-DOS) was that CR only would also line feed (the TRS-80 series did this.)
MS-DOS uses CR/LF, so the printer goes forward a line for the CR, and then
again for the LF.
