[comp.sys.ibm.pc] drive problems

scarlett@watdcsu.waterloo.edu (Brian Scarlett) (09/15/89)

Occasionally when installing software via an install bat, I find that the
directories for the floppies are not being updated. So I get errors like
'that is not disk X you dimwit' when in fact it damn well is disk X.
I checked. (living on the edge, these are original orginals:)

This happens on both drives and (so far) on 360 and 720k style disks.
Updating of floppy directories (all 4 types of disks) does not seem to be
a problem otherwise.
Several friends have indicated that this is a known problem
with an easy solution. Only no one is sure what that solution is:)

system: 16MHz AT with A:1.2 M, B:1.44 M and 1 M on the mboard. No clever
stuff in the config or groovey caching (other than fastopen and buffers
of course) and the AMI CMOS seems correct.
