Here is a summary of responses to my question about 386-based portable or laptop alternatives to IBM P70-386 portable. From: Tom Haapanen <tom@mims-iris.waterloo.edu> We've had a Toshiba 5100 for a while, and just bought a P70 (both using our educational discounts). My supervisor hates the P70. :-) The P70 doesn't have a CPU cache, so it doesn't run much faster than the 16 MHz 5100. It has a VGA-compatible display, but no way to adjust the grayscale (the 5100 has a program that lets you associate grays with colours). To us, the microchannel is no real advantage: no add-on card that we know of (and would have use for) works any better with MC, and of course all our other machines have the AT bus, so the cards are not interchangeable. I also believe that you can get the 5100 with a bigger hard disk. I think the 5100 is slicker, but neither is probably a bad choice. From: LORD BARBER <conan@vax1.acs.udel.edu> who suckered you into buying this machine? must have gotten a discount or present. I guarantee that in 8-10 years IBM will come out with a new and improved, non-compatible OS. but that's life. From: Steve Jacobs <jacobs%cmos@cs.utah.edu> Have you seen the Toshiba 5200? They have at least one version with 100Mb disk. Also, the Toshiba has cache memory, which may make it significantly faster than the IBM.
