b I thought the 'Mister' designation was either some kind of rank equivalent, as previous articles have said, or a Federation prefix for Vulcans (superseded by high ranks like 'Ambassador' in the episode with Spock's father). However, the first choice has a problem: If the 'Mister' was a naval ranking, why was Uhura often referred to a Lieutenant Uhura in the old TV episodes? It might just be that the moviemakers were being non-sexist to the extreme (life in the future ...), and didn't mind that doing so is not consistent with the old episodes.
