[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Rumours of a new and terrible virus...

paul@csnz.co.nz (Paul Gillingwater) (09/23/89)

Hello.

There are rumours.
Of a terrible new virus.
For the IBM PC.
This virus is a complex program.
It reformats hard disks.
It does strange things to FAT tables.
The virus lurks in networks.
Ordinary programs often fail because of it.
Tens of thousands of hours of skilled time
have gone into fixing problems caused by it.
But that's not all.
There's something more to tell....
The virus is so insidious, that people will
sometimes _deliberately_ install it on
their own systems, despite my warnings.
And there's more.
Some people actually *pay* to have it installed.
You don't get this virus for free.
You have to BUY it!
But it gets worse than that.
The virus is not restricted to DOS.
Through some strange and terrible mutations,
there are rumours that it might strike UNIX next.
By passing through a gateway.
And now the terrible secret can be revealed.
Shudder down your spine, as I reveal the
dreaded name of this software Frankenstein's monster...
it's name is... (oh, it's too frightening to say in
full, so I shall letter or half it.)
*N*o*v*e*l*l***N*e*t*w*a*r*e.
There.
The secret is out.
Now you know.
Beware the terror, lurking, lurking.
