[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Looking for commercial compression utility

dougs@videovax.tv.Tek.com (Doug Stevens) (09/26/89)

I've tried direct email to the authors without success, so here goes:

I'm looking for a compression utility that I can ship with commercial
software. The utility will be used for initial installation (to reduce
the number of disks needed), but it would also be nice to let the
customers use it for other purposes. There will be no attempt to
restrict further distribution of the compression utility, if that is
a license requirement. Distribution fee or royalty is fine (as long
as it's reasonable).

I've seen conflicting information about whether ZOO can be distributed
this way. Does anyone know for sure (I can't reach Rahul Dhesi).

How about PKPAK and PKUNPAK.

If neither of these, does anyone have recommendations? (I have moral
qualms about using SEA ARC).

I noticed that the latest version of Corel Draw (1.1) was shipped with
LHARC which still offers the best compression of any of the programs out
there.

How about using PKZIP/PKUNZIP. This is low-cost shareware that does a
great job of compressing. It comes with a utility that will convert
.ZIP file to a self-extracting .EXE file. You could ZIP the file,
convert it to EXE and the user then only has to execute it in the
sub-directory where he wants it unzipped. The user does not need
to have the compress software. If he has a need to use ZIP for other
needs, he can register his own version for a relative small fee.
