Recommendations (or software to avoid) for optical
character recognition for an HP ScanJet Plus needed.

	Thanks in advance.

The HP software does a pretty good job on fixed pitch fonts. If there
is any good typeset OCR software I haven't seen it.

I checked out Omnipage 386 recently wan was very impressed. I scanned a
page from a manual (STFM) and it was 100% accurate. I had less wonderful
results from my nasty test where I scanned from a magazine which had a
screen behind the letters. Even that did better than I expected. It did
not like dot-matrix however. I understand there is some new software
coming out called (I think) ReadRight2 which is supposed to handle dot
matrix as well. One thing that impressed me about omnipage was the way
it looked at a page of columnated text and figured out the order of the
text automatically. It was correct in its assumptions.
Omnipage could output to many formats including WordPerfect 5.0 and it
automatically included bolding, italics etc. Very nice.

You may want to check out the Truescan OCR board. I saw a demo of it and
it was able to scan it photocopies of faxes and telexes that we
provided with very few errors. It was attached to a DEST scanner. It is
not cheap though.
