I recently read in PC Magazine that the DOS version of Lotus 1-2-3 Release 3 requires 1MB of memory (640K conventional plus 384K extended). My machine has an 80286 with the required 1MB of memory, but the computer copies some system ROM (I'm not sure how much) into the extended RAM and write protects it. Can I use Release 3 with this computer without adding any more memory or should I get Release 2.2 instead? 1-2-3 R3 requires at least 384K of available extended memory (more if
you don't have much free conventional memory) in order to start up. If
your computer uses up some of the 384K it has, 1-2-3 R3 shouldn't work (I
say "shouldn't" because I've never tried it on such a machine; however,
judging from past experience, I'd bet it won't work).
If you need R3, then buy some more memory - another 512K or 1M won't
really cost you that much these days. Use whatever you have left over
for a disk cache or something - it's worth the money, IMHO.

I use 123 rel 3 on a 4 megabyte machine 386, and find it slow and sluggish. I also use 2.2. Much better. Recommendation, use ver 3 if you require extensive work in 3 dimensional spreadsheets. And better linking by haveing multiple worksheets active in memory at the same time. But if these are not top priority, use 2.2. Better printing with Always and faster execution of commands, such as copy and move. There are other features in ver 3, but linking and 3d are the main oness. In a one meg machine, you can't do too much of that anyway, so best stick to 2.2. -- Jim Birken Domain: Jim.Birken@bigtime.fidonet.org UUCP: ...!{tektronix, hplabs!hp-pcd}!orstcs!bigtime!Jim.Birken via Big Time Television (bigtime.fidonet.org, 1:152/201)
