[net.music] song id--bonzo dog band?

czp@houxa.UUCP (C.PODARAS) (05/03/84)

greetings, campers. here's a challenging (?) one that's been bugging me.
the tune dates back to the mid 70's, and all I remember is the story.

at one point in the song we hear a guy running, who ends up closing himself
into a phone booth, gasping for breath. coins drop, the phone he's calling
rings, and a voice says 'hello?'. he then screams, over a pounding beat,

		gimme doctor rock!
		give me doctor roll!
		he's got the {something}
		that satisfies my soul!

scene shifts. we're listening to a very quiet hospital operating room. basic
breathing and operating-y type sounds. then

	doctor: "nurse, scalpel please"
	nurse:	"scalpel"
	d:	"clamp"
	n:	"clamp"
	d:	"saxophone"
(real jazzy sax starts toodling along)
	d:	"vibes"
		(vibes join in)
	etc.
	etc.

sounds very bonzo dog band style... maybe it is. (it isn't, however, the bdb
tune that has all sorts of famous people joining in on various instruments)

if you've got any idea, i'd appreciate hearing about it. by the way, does
anyone out there enjoy kid creole and the coconuts?

hmmm... maybe we need a net.music.bizarre.obscure...

The song with the "Gimme Dr. Rock" lyrics are from the album "Electric
Shocks" by Roger Ruskin Spear. That fine album also contained the
memorable "(I Want to be your) Mattress Man." It also had the song
"All My Yourself in the Moonlight" (possibly not the exact title -- I'm
at work and my record collection is at home) which started out as a
little solo piece and gradually had people butting in playing various
instruments, including steamship whistle and rush hour traffic.

Roger was one of the original Bonzo Dog Band members. I don't know
what he's up to these days. In fact, other than Neil Innes, I haven't
heard anything about any of the BDB members in years. The last one I
remember hearing about (other than Neil who we all know and love for
his work with Monty Python and the Rutles) was Viv Stanshall doing the
narration for "Tubular Bells." Has anybody got more up-to-date info?

If anyone wants specfic info on the Roger Spear album, send me
mail.
